The Art of Horror
Updated February 27, 2007

The arts of writing and illustration have always been closely knit. As lyrics enhance music, art has enhanced and expanded fiction for centuries. From illustrations of short stories in magazines, to JPEGs on a web 'zine, to luscious cover art for novels on bookshelves everywhere, horror stories and horror art go hand in hand.

Many HWA members have overlapping careers as artists and writers. In addition, we have many artists who belong to HWA as Associates because of the networking opportunities membership provides even to non-writing illustrators. This page is a showcase of our member artists' work. When it's time to locate a dark artist for your next book cover, we hope you'll look here first.

T. M. Arensberg

"'The greatest fear for artists is staring at the blank page. A greater fear for advertisors is not having the ability to fill that page.

Filling that page with wonders of the imagination is what we do at Haunted Minds.

Michael Ian Bateson

"'...Am I not man, does my heart not bleed? No Lord, no God, no hate, no pity, no pain, just ME...I choose my way. Never to be ruled nor held to heel. Not heaven or hell just the land between.' "Joy" -- VNV Nation

Hertzan Chimera

"There are eight full colour paintings from my former life as a psycho-figurative artist and twelve B&W images from the Creation Press published graphic novel, The Songs of Gilles de Rais."

Sandy DeLuca

"I have a degree in Fine Arts, with heavy concentration on studio painting. Years ago I never realized my love of art could be combined with my love for dark fiction. However, as of late I've been doing just that. Some of the illustrations in the first gallery are from my new poetry and art chapbook, Burial Plot in Sagittarius. Others are from The Red, Red Robin Project from Lone Wolf Publications, which I had the honor of illustrating earlier this year. The illustrations in the second gallery are lighter fantasies. I hope you enjoy them all."

Stefan Duncan

Stefan has a B.A. Degree in English and Art. His works are in various museums around the world. He has done book covers and illustrating for his children's book series beginning summer of 2003. Duncan has just begun moving into the horror genre with his art, and is not by any means finished -- his table is spread with something for just about anyone's taste!

GAK

"'It is only after we have lost Everything, that we are free to do Anything.' Tyler Durden. Twisted fine line illustration so sharp it can put your eye out. Horror, Sci-fi, Fantasy and so much MORE!!!"

Yvonne Navarro

"It's been quite while (as in years) since I've had time to draw -- no doubt now I'd have to 'start all over' if I decided to take up a piece of graphite again. Still, I keep telling myself that I might do it someday, especially when I write a story and have an image in my mind that I so want to go along with the words I'm sharing with the world. Until that elusive day of free time comes, stop by the Gallerie de Strange on my web site and see what I did in days gone 'bye.'"

Margaret Balif Simon

"Come visit my websites, friends of art both dark and light! I have color on one, b/w on the other. Some for sale. But the selling isn't the big deal, it's a way to display my various seasons of styles, images. My illustrations have appeared in Extremes, as well as in a special edition of Pulp Eternity. I suppose you'd call me a veteran illustrator since the late 80's. Just shows you I'm not by any means finished -- my table is spread with something for just about anyone's taste!"

Jamie Swimm

"I'm Jamie Swimm, Massachusetts writer/artist. I'm currently looking for work in the New England area if you happen to be an employer looking for someone for artistic/writing endeavors."

Wayne Thoden

Fright Time Stories and other Images is a book of Wayne's illustrations from a yet to be published collection of nine horror short stories for young readers. Wayne is also the writer. The image here is from the story "The Hungry House."

G.W. Thomas

"My art is largely inspired by the Weird Tales illustrators -- Lee Brown Coye, Hannes Bok, etc. Unlike many artists, I'm not interested in what I call 'reporter drawing' but the atmosphere of an image. My Mythos collection The Book of the Black Sun is available from Double Dragon Books June 1, 2002. My horror poetry collection Prairie Cemetery is available from Kingfisher Books June 1, 2002. Read a preview poem here. Read my stories, articles, poetry and see my artwork free here.

Jeffrey Thomas

"At my site for Necropolitan Press one can find some of the cover art I've done for magazines like Freezer Burn (my site's front page) and my own collection Avatars of the Old Ones (on my catalog page). Many of the projects I've produced through Necropolitan Press feature illustrations and collages by myself, such as The Early History of Ambergris. Recently I've done covers for the magazine Flesh & Blood and the collection Poddities."
