It’s an old British tradition that reached the height of its popularity during the late nineteenth century. The idea was that Christmas Eve was the one night of the year that the dead could roam the earth, so the ghost story became a natural form of entertainment. This is actually where “A Christmas Carol” came about. Dickens was a big fan of the tradition and wrote several ghost stories meant to be read at Christmas, but “Carol” became quickly and intimately tied to the holiday, so much so that, even though we’ve forgotten about the ghost story tradition, it’s still difficult to think of Christmas without thinking of “A Christmas Carol.”

I have looooong had M.R. James on my to-read list, and this just makes me want to bump him up higher! And I’ve never heard of Christmas Eve being a traditional night for telling ghost stories before. Fascinating stuff!
