NEW YORK, JUNE 9. This past weekend, the Horror Writers Association (HWA) honored excellence in horror, suspense and dark fantasy by presenting this year's Bram Stoker Awards at its annual banquet ceremony in New York. Bestselling author Peter Straub was on hand to receive the night's top honor in the Novel category with last year's lost boy lost girl.

"The active members of the HWA consider hundreds of works annually, and the new talent emerging year by year is just overwhelming," said Joe Nassise, President of the Horror Writers Association. "For those writers who take home the Bram Stoker, it is an acknowledgement by their peers that they have created a work that is truly outstanding."

Others honored at the banquet included Brian Keene for his first novel, The Rising; Jack Ketchum took home awards for his story "Closing Time" and his fiction collection Peaceable Kingdom; Gary A. Braunbeck was awarded for his story "Duty;" Tom and Elizabeth Monteleone received the Bram Stoker Award for the anthology Borderlands 5, and Mr. Monteleone won a second award for his nonfiction collection The Mothers and Fathers Italian Association; Neil Gaiman received the Illustrated Narrative award for The Sandman: Endless Nights; J. K. Rowling won for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; indie filmmaker Don Coscarelli took home an award for his Bubba-Ho Tep screenplay; Bruce Boston received the award in poetry for his collection Pitchblende; and Michael Arnzen was honored in Alternate Forms for his work "The Goreletter."

In conjunction with this year's awards, the Horror Writers Association held a benefit auction for legendary author and editor Charles L. Grant, who has been hospitalized indefinitely with severe cardiopulmonary disease and emphysema. Contributors included Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub and Leisure Books. The event raised over $10,000 for Mr. Grant.

Anne Rice is the author of more than 26 novels, including the bestselling Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches series. Martin H. Greenberg has published over 900 works in virtually every genre.

Horror Writers Association Holds Auction to Benefit Stricken Author

NEW YORK, MAY 13. The Horror Writers Association (HWA) is planning a benefit auction for legendary author and editor Charles L. Grant, who has been hospitalized indefinitely with severe cardio-pulmonary disease and emphysema. Mr. Grant, whose body of work spans five decades and has earned him the HWA's coveted Lifetime Achievement Award, faces a tremendous burden on his health and substantial health-related expenses.

In response to this dire situation, the HWA has called for contributions to a benefit auction for Mr. Grant. Although HWA is not a charitable organization and contributions can not be considered charitable donations, this has not stopped a flood of concerned writers, editors and publishers from contributing to this cause.

Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, Clive Barker and nearly fifty other accomplished authors have confirmed contributions to the event. Publishers such as Leisure Books, Earthling Publications and Night Shade Books have also contributed.

"The response has been amazing," said Joe Nassise, president of the Horror Writers Association. "The absolute generosity of everyone involved has been truly overwhelming."

This two-part fundraiser, being held in conjunction with the HWA's annual Bram Stoker Awards Banquet weekend, is the first of its kind for the organization. One component of the fundraiser is a high-profile auction to be held on eBay beginning May 23 and running until June 5, the evening of the awards. Bidders can find all auction items by searching the eBay User ID "bookwyrm55." The second component is a silent auction to be held June 4-6 at the HWA annual meeting in New York City where the Bram Stoker Awards will be presented.

HWA Launches Book Preview Club

Dateline September 18, 2002

Ghosts, Ghouls, and Things that Go Bump in the Night! The Horror Writers Association, in conjunction with Chapteraday.com, is pleased to announce the formation of the Horror and Supernatural Suspense book preview club, to begin service just in time for this year's Halloween season.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Suzanne Beecher, Chapteraday.com currently offers seven different book clubs to choose from -- everything from business to romance to audio works is represented. Their eighth and newest club will focus on the best the horror and dark fantasy genre has to offer. Membership in any of Chapteraday's clubs is free. Subscribers receive an excerpt from that week's selected book in their email each day, Monday through Friday. The selections are designed to be short, taking up no more than five minutes of reading time a day, with the stated goal of getting people ordinarily too busy to read hooked on reading again. When the week is over, members can purchase the book from several different online bookstores or check it out from the local library. Each week brings a new selected book.

Says HWA President-elect Joseph Nassise, "Horror fiction serves an important function in our society as it allows us a means through which we can deal with our everyday fears, letting us channel them into a safe, controlled environment where we can temporarily escape the problems of the real world around us. There are some tremendously talented writers operating in the horror field today, writers the average reader just isn't aware of. Chapteraday's book clubs are the perfect means by which to connect the works of our members and the general reading public."

Currently reaching over 100,000 readers and being offered in more than 3,500 public libraries across the country, the book preview clubs have been a huge success. "With the world's largest organization of horror writers behind this new club, readers are going to be getting the very best works to preview. What more could a lover of dark fiction want?"

Interested readers can sign up for the new club by sending an email to join-horror@book.chapteraday.com For further details, see HWA's Excerpts page.
